Swim Training Aids

The swim sessions will use fins and paddles almost every week. They are a very valuable and important training tool.  You will need to have your own fins and paddles.

You must have the right kind of fins and paddles. The fins cannot be snorkeling fins (the ones with the long blades). These will develop the wrong type of kick. For the paddles you want to get a pair slightly larger than your hand. You don’t want oversized paddles. You will just develop shoulder and rotor cuff issues with paddles that are too big. It doesn’t matter whether they are more square or more rounded but you want the type where you slide your hands into bands/tubing.

We use kick boards and pull floats quite often. We can use the ones at the pool but if you want to have your own that’s an option as well.  About half the people have their own and half use the pool’s.  We also recommend a swim mesh bag.

For those who plan on doing open water swim you may want to consider getting neoprene swim gloves.

Below are examples of swim training aids that we recommend.

As we get ready for Open Water swims some of you may want to consider getting one of these.  They will make it easier to been seen and can also provide flotation if needed. Several HMC members use these all the time during our OWS.
